“I am a second generation Vietnamese-Australian and the son of Vietnamese refugees. My hope for the VMA is that it captures both the historical and modern essence of what it means to be Vietnamese. The obvious starting place for this is to document and reflect on the refugee experience of Vietnamese people following the end of the Vietnam War on 30 April 1975. This is the moment in recent history that often defines the identity and experiences of the Vietnamese diaspora outside of Vietnam. When we have finished our work there, my hope is that the VMA will move to telling the stories of extraordinary Vietnamese-Australians in the future.”
